For thousands of years mystics and pilgrims have undertaken the tough pilgrimage to the origin of life cradling River Ganga. The journey to her sanctuary is an unmatched spiritual experience which is compounded by the stark beauty of the Himalayas that guard her sacred home. While Ganga begins her quest from Gaumukh or the Cow’s Mouth some believe her origins lie farther up in the sprawling meadows of Tapovan in the shadow of mighty mountains like Shivling and Meru. A trek to Gaumukh and Tapovan promises to be an adventure of a lifetime!
Start in the morning from Dehradun and reach Gangotri by evening. Witness the Ganga Aarti in the evening and overnight in Gangotri.
It is an easy trail along the Bhagirathi River. Trail starts through dense Deodar forest and climbs alongside the river valley. After around 8km mark comes a resting place called Chirbasa which is a pine forest. Night halt in tents at Bhojbasa from where one gets excellent view of Bhagirathi peaks.
After breakfast trek to Gaumukh (cows face) Glacier considered as source of Ganges. On the way enjoy beautiful views of Bhagirathi peaks on the way.
